Human Performance Technology, or HPT, is defined as the systematic approach to improve human performance by studying and improving productivity in an organization.

Dr. Thomas Gilbert 

  • Defined as the "Father of HPT."

  • During his time researching under B.F. Skinner, Dr. Gilbert determined that if environmental barriers are removed, human performance improves. 

  • Published and wrote Human Competence: Engineering Worthy Performance.

Dr. Joe Harless 

  • Pioneered front-end analysis. 

  • Advocated for designers to determine problems in the current instruction and design a solution. 

  • Determined there are alternatives to training.

Robert Mager 

  • Advocated and popularized performance learning objectives.

  • He focused on how to improve student learning through objectives. 

  • Published and wrote Analyzing Performance Problems.

Dr. Geary Rummler

  • Pioneered organizational performance in the field of HPT.

  • He advocated for organizations to focus on honing in on employee weaknesses and aim to improve them.

  •  Wrote and published an influential text entitled, Improving Performance.
